Tweetsport, the real-time sport news site announced the winners in the Tweetsport Twitlist for Sport today (Tuesday 4th October 2011) in the categories of most popular sport, player, media, team and pundit, declaring Robbie Savage the no 1 Sporting Twit for pundits.

"I've tripled checked the figures and its official, Robbie is the biggest Twit" said Tweetsport founder Eilidh Donaldson.  "The winner is based on the highest number of followers, and incredibly the player everyone loved to hate has become the pundit everyone loves to follow. His transition from player to omnipresent pundit, sequined Saturday night celebrity and all-round #legend has been built on Twitter and with over 450,000 followers and growing who knows where this will end."

Completing the top 5 pundits are Andrew Flintoff (Cricket), Jake Humphrey (F1), Chris Kamara (Football) and Georgie Thomson (Sky Sports Presenter). "Jake Humphrey's profile has been lifted by F1 but he'll be looking for a new gig at the end of this season with the BBC's reduced coverage. On this showing if I was Sue Barker I'd be worried."

The top player in each sport list featured many big names but also had some surprises, with Ruebens Barrichello easily outstripping Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton for top man in F1. "Ruebens Tweets in English and Portuguese so you know what he had for breakfast in two languages, which is nice."

Tweetsport only follow real accounts and Eilidh thinks fake accounts have impacted the results "Ian Poulter could have mounted a challenge for the No1 spot in Golf if he had mustered his fake accounts following. Still with the Ryder, Walker and Solheim Cups plus 3 of the 4 majors it's nice to see the US win something. At least Tiger will have one title on his CV this year."

Football's 48 million followers dominated the Sports Twitlist based on the top 200 most followed accounts, with cricket a distant 2nd 40% behind and golf 3rd. American sports claimed 4th despite only have three accounts currently on Tweetsport's list, with tennis 5th.

"Our winners have all received their awards (virtual hugs via Twitter) but it will be a much closer battle next time.  With sport waking up to the potential of social media and the Olympics happening next year there is still all to play for and you can follow it all on Tweetsport."
